Here are some of our top reasons to visit the Lake District in March.

1. Enjoy the Lake District before the crowds arrive
   This year Easter falls during the second week of April, so the school holidays will be slightly later. This means that March is the ideal time to enjoy all the Lake District hotspots before the crowds arrive. You’ll find it easier to get reservations at the top restaurants and attractions, and you can enjoy the most popular walking routes without seeing another soul on the fells.
2. The daffodils are in full bloom
   Everyone loves to see the daffodils at this time of year. One of the best places to see them in their full glory is at Glencoyne by Ullswater, which is the spot that inspired William Wordsworth to pen his famous poem “I Wandered Lonely As A Cloud”. We recommend this pretty walk that takes you past the dramatic waterfall at Aira Force, along the edge of Ullswater and through the Glencoyne woods to see the flowers. Take your camera and marvel at the views.

3. There’s a world-famous Marmalade Festival
   Saturday 14th & Sunday 15th March at the Dalmain Estate
   This is the 15th year of the world-famous Dalmain Marmalade Festival. The historic country estate of Dalmain will be brimming with marmalade stalls, cookery demonstrations, and talks all revolving around the sweet orange treat. There will be plenty of other forms of entertainment available, including street performers and a human fruit machine. The nearby town of Penrith will be festooned in orange with an array of orange window displays and special offers.

4. Spring Beer Festival at Hawkshead Brewery
   20-22nd March, Staveley
   One of the most successful artisan brewery companies in the UK is the Hawkshead Brewery. Every year they host a festival of independent beers, artisan brewers and innovations in brewing. The spring festival takes place between 20-22nd March in the village of Staveley, between Windermere and Kendal. As well as plenty of unusual beers to try, there will be live music all day long, delicious food to eat and a great deal of merriment. It’s always a family event, so everyone is welcome.

5. Words by the Water
   6-15 March, Keswick
   If you are a keen reader or writer, you can rub shoulders with some of the UK’s finest writers and thinkers at the leading literature festival in the North West, Words by the Water. This is a ten-day spring festival of more than 100 events that celebrate writing in all its forms and stimulates debate and discussion over the important issues of the moment. This year’s line up includes Jenny Eclair, Joan Bakewell, John Crace, Melvyn Bragg, Natalie Haynes, Polly Toynbee, Ruth Davidson, Steve Richards and Val McDermid. You can engage with the speakers in the Q&A sessions or chat with them in the bar.
