Otter Tarn Estate in the Lake District
Mungeon Farm Backbarrow
Mungeon Farm is a working farm which is signed up to a higher level environmental scheme and is farmed to very tight prescriptions.
The farm consists of a herd of Belted Galloway cattle, a breed renowned for its hardiness, longevity, striking appearance and good nature. Known as Belties, this distinctive breed hails from the harsh uplands of the Galloway Hills in South-west Scotland. Our pedigree herd is a native breed well suited to the environment and farmed to protect valuable genetic traits for the future.
Environmental Scheme
The environmental scheme has resulted in three men working four years on 1.6 km of dry stone walling where the stone was actually sourced from within the estate itself.
130 acres of invasive bracken have been sprayed with the helicopter. The 500 acres carry 150 new nesting boxes caring for 134 different bird species. Thousands of native trees have been planted and several acres of scrub gorse have been removed.
All 34 field gates on the property have been replaced with new wooden gates. No fertilizers or chemicals other than a few allowable have been used so as to encourage the broad range of flora.
The wild deer herd are managed and the quality of the stock has been much improved.
The Lake
The lake is well maintained and is one of the popular walks for our guests. It is the focal point of the Estate. It lends itself to some fantastic photography and dramatic drone shots.
Mungeon Farm has leased the lake to a local fishing club, but it is also available for guests, by arrangement. The lake is regularly stocked with rainbow trout. The layout with islands and spits is designed to give anglers of all abilities the best chance of catching as well as adding to the Lakes beauty and tranquility.
