History
A Family Estate with Generations of Heritage
Otter Tarn has always been more than a place; it’s a living landscape shaped by history and care. The estate’s story stretches back through generations, where farming traditions, stone walling, and woodland management formed the fabric of daily life. Over time, cottages, folds, and even flax retting sites were woven into the land, leaving behind a legacy that can still be felt today.
When the family began restoring and reimagining Otter Tarn, their vision was simple: to create a destination where heritage meets superior modern comfort, and where guests can experience the Lake District National Park in its most authentic form.
Ancient features have been preserved, while new spaces, like our carefully designed lodges and barn conversion, have been created to fit seamlessly into the landscape.
Today, the estate welcomes visitors to walk its paths, admire its wildlife, and stay in its properties, each built with respect for the land’s past and promise for its future. It’s a place where tradition, family values, and contemporary comfort come together, offering guests more than a holiday; offering them a story to be part of.
SUSTAINABILITY
Caring for Land, Wildlife, and People
From stone wall restorations to wetland creation and wildflower planting, sustainability lies at the heart of everything we do. With annual wildlife surveys, innovative no-fence grazing technology, and careful woodland management, we work daily to nurture biodiversity and protect the estate for generations to come. Thanks to our regenerative farming efforts, we are also sequestering 43,000 kilograms of carbon each year, making us proudly carbon negative — a commitment that allows every guest to enjoy a genuinely sustainable, carbon-negative holiday where luxury meets responsibility.
AWARDS
Recognition for Excellence and Care
Our commitment to heritage and hospitality has been recognised through regional and national awards, celebrating both the quality of our lodges and the environmental initiatives across the estate. These achievements reflect our family’s dedication to providing exceptional experiences while respecting the land we call home.
