Enjoy peaceful fly fishing on Otter Tarn’s private 13-acre lake, available to guests staying on the estate. Surrounded by woodland and open Lake District countryside, it’s a wonderfully tranquil place to fish from morning through to sunset.

Wander down from your lodge or Mungeon Barn and enjoy the lake at your own pace. Small islands, spits and varied shoreline add interest, while jetties lead towards the islands and offer different places to enjoy the water and views.

Whether you’re an experienced angler or simply enjoy a few peaceful hours by the water, private lake fishing is one of the experiences that makes a stay at Otter Tarn so special.

With luxury accommodation and fishing on the same private estate, Otter Tarn is a peaceful base for fishing holidays and fishing breaks in the Lake District.

Walking & the Wainwrights

You don’t even need to leave Otter Tarn to start exploring. With 500 acres of private countryside, guests can enjoy peaceful estate walks straight from their accommodation. Stroll around the lake and its islands, head up through the estate towards the fells, or walk to the old wartime lookout tower, where on a clear day you can see across three counties with Lake Windermere in the distance.

Beyond the estate, Otter Tarn is a wonderful base for walking holidays and walking breaks in the Lake District. Explore Cartmel walks and the surrounding South Lakes countryside, or venture further to take on some of the famous Wainwright fells. With 214 Wainwrights to discover, there is always another Lake District walk to plan.

After a day exploring the fells, return to your lodge or Mungeon Barn, relax in your private hot tub and enjoy the peace of the estate.

Wildlife & Nature at Otter Tarn

Otter Tarn’s 500-acre private estate is home to an incredible variety of Lake District wildlife. Deer roam through the estate, while hares, barn owls, kestrels, pheasants and partridge can all be spotted across the surrounding countryside. Otters can also be seen around the tarn, alongside the fish and other wildlife that make the lake their home.

One of the most special experiences is osprey spotting. Ospreys visit the tarn to hunt, giving guests the rare opportunity to watch these magnificent birds circling above the lake and diving for fish in their natural environment.

Years of conservation work across the estate have also helped create valuable habitats for an exceptional variety of butterflies, including rare species. Bring your camera or binoculars and enjoy birdwatching, wildlife watching and wildlife photography straight from the estate, from early mornings beside the lake to peaceful evenings around your lodge.

Fine Dining, Country Pubs & Cartmel

We’re privileged to be surrounded by some of the UK’s most celebrated dining experiences. Within around a 10-minute drive you’ll find three-Michelin-starred L’Enclume, alongside Michelin-starred Rogan & Co and Heft, making this corner of the Lake District exceptional for food lovers.

Cartmel, just three miles away, is at the heart of the local food scene, with wonderful restaurants in Cartmel, traditional country pubs and independent places to eat and drink. Enjoy a long lunch, cosy pub or evening over good food with family and friends.

Cartmel is also home to the famous Cartmel Racecourse, attracting thousands of visitors to its popular race meetings. Just three miles away, Otter Tarn is ideal for Cartmel Racecourse accommodation, a race weekend with friends or a luxury Lake District break.

For nights when you’d rather stay in, private dining can be arranged at your lodge or Mungeon Barn for a special evening without leaving the estate.
